Let’s talk about… the latest data, figures and recommendations on the circular transformation of the plastics system in Poland and Europe
6 October 2026, 14:20–15:20, Poznań, MTP, Hall 5, stage
The European transition towards a circular plastics system has slowed dramatically. According to Plastics Europe’s latest report, ‘Circular Plastics – An Analysis of the Situation in Europe’, the annual growth rate of circular plastics production has fallen significantly. Interest in circular plastics among converters has also declined. Furthermore, the trade data included in the report for the first time highlights the significant dependence of the plastics transition in Europe on external value chains. During the session, we will present the latest key findings from the report and discuss key challenges and recommendations concerning, amongst other things:
- the worrying trend of increasing waste incineration
- the role of separate collection in the development of the circular economy
- the need to include incinerators in the ETS
- the risks associated with Europe’s dependence on external supply chains
- the risks arising from the export of sorted waste outside the EU
- the potential of circular plastics in ensuring strategic security
- tools for rebuilding the competitiveness of European industry.
